History of the Artifact
The silver denarius struck by L. Livineius Regulus around 42 B.C. belongs to the turbulent final years of the Roman Republic, a time marked by civil war and shifting loyalties following the assassination of Julius Caesar. As a triumvir monetalis, or moneyer, Livineius Regulus was responsible for issuing coinage in the name of the state, and his coins reflect both traditional Republican imagery and the political uncertainty of the period. The obverse bears his name, L. LIVINEIVS REGVLVS, accompanied by a finely engraved portrait — in most examples, this is a symbolic or divine head rather than a living person, since portraits of political figures were still a sensitive matter so soon after Caesar’s death.
Coins of Livineius Regulus often feature on the reverse a legionary eagle flanked by two military standards, a design celebrating Rome’s armies and appealing to soldiers’ loyalty during a time when military allegiance determined political power. The issue likely coincided with the campaigns of the Second Triumvirate, when Mark Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus were consolidating control of the Republic’s territories. These denarii were struck in large quantities to pay troops and finance operations in the East, and their craftsmanship shows the confident, martial style of late Republican coinage. Each piece reflects the transition from a fading Republic to the emerging imperial order — a small but vivid artifact of Rome on the brink of transformation.
