History of the Artifact

This carnelian intaglio is carved from a warm, translucent orange-red chalcedony and engraved in intaglio—a technique in which the design is cut into the surface of the stone, creating a recessed image. When pressed into wax or clay, the carving produces a raised seal impression, allowing the gem to function as a personal signature in daily life.

The scene depicts Pegasus, shown in a dynamic flying or galloping pose, wings extended and body in motion. In Roman symbolism, Pegasus embodied inspiration, swiftness, and ascent—a creature capable of bridging earth and sky. He was linked to poetic insight, imagination, and the sudden arrival of clear thought or fortune.

In accordance with Roman tradition, to the wearer, such an image could express:

  • Quickness of mind or action
  • A striving toward higher or more noble aims
  • Affinity with creativity, eloquence, or vision
