Late Roman Bronze Ring with Chi-Rho Symbol
Date: c. 4th - 5th Century A.D.
Weight: 7.65 grams
Size: 9.5 (U.S.) / T (U.K.)
History of the Artifact
This robust Late Roman bronze ring features a broad, rounded bezel deeply engraved with the Chi-Rho (☧) monogram—one of the earliest and most iconic symbols of Christianity. The design consists of the superimposed Greek letters “Χ” (Chi) and “Ρ” (Rho), the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ). Two incised bands on either side of the bezel further emphasize the centrality of the motif and contribute to the ring’s structured and intentional composition.
The ring’s band is thick and slightly flared at the shoulders, offering both durability and visual balance. Its surface is coated in a rich green patina, the product of long-term burial and oxidation, which attests to the ring’s antiquity while lending it a textured, almost mineral quality.
A Note on Chi-Ro Rings:
Rings such as this were more than items of personal adornment—they served as discrete declarations of faith in an era when Christianity was transitioning from a persecuted religion to the official faith of the Roman Empire. The Chi-Rho itself gained prominence under Constantine the Great, who adopted it as a military and imperial emblem following his victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in A.D. 312.
